Green Tea for Skin: Why it works and How to use it.

 

Whether you drink it or apply it, green tea is good for overall well-being. drinking a cup of green tea helps detoxify the body, reduce cholesterol and blood pressure; and when applied topically, it works wonder for the skin too. Full of antioxidants, vitamins and calming properties, green tea benefits skin in various ways. Read further to know how I use Green tea in my beauty routine – for rejuvenating facial skin, to revive dull hair and to soothe tired eyes.

Why Green tea works?

Green Tea has compounds like polyphenols that have antioxidant properties. These antioxidants help fight free radicals that cause fine lines and wrinkles on the face. 

Green tea has Vitamin B-2 that help the skin look youthful and Vitamin E promotes cells regeneration. 

The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in green tea relieve itchy skin and fight against acne.

How to use Green Tea:

As Cleanser: Brew a cup of green tea by using a teabag. Remove the tea bag, the concoction is ready to use once it cools. If you are using loose green tea leaves, strain them and let the tea cool. Take 2 tablespoons of this green tea infused water and one tablespoon of honey. Mix it and massage it on the face in a circular motion. Rinse it off after a minute.

To use as a face wash, brew a cup of green tea and let it cool. Once it comes to a safe temperature use it as a simple face wash. 

How to brew green tea: As a general rule of thumb, let the water heat just short of boiling. (Never boil water for green tea). Place the tea leaves or tea bag in a cup. Pour water over it and let it steep for a minute. Cover the cup with a lid. Remove the tea bag or strain if you are using leaves. Green Tea is ready to use in your DIY skincare routine.

As Face Mask: Brew a cup of green tea, remove the teabag and let it cool to a comfortable temperature. Cut open the tea bag and empty the moistened tea leaves in a bowl. Add one tablespoon of curd to it. Mix to make a paste. Apply it all over the face and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water. You can also add 1 teaspoon of powdered oats to the green tea, curd mixture to make the mask even more nourishing.

To brighten the skin, use green tea, gram flour and a lemon juice face mask. Gram flour(besan) exfoliate the dead skin cells and vitamin C in lemon helps diminishes scars and hyperpigmentation. To make the mask mix 1 tablespoon of green tea and gram flour and a few drops of lemon juice. Apply this face pack. Don’t put it near your eyes. Leave the mask for 10 minutes and rinse it off with water. 

As Exfoliator: Brew green tea and let it cool. Add 1 teaspoon brown or powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon olive or virgin coconut oil in 2 tablespoons of green tea. Use this homemade scrub to exfoliate your facial skin by making a sweeping upward motion. Wash it off with water after a minute.

For Puffy Eyes: The presence of caffeine and tannins in green tea helps reduce inflammation around the eyes. Brew and chill green tea bags. Place them on your eyes for 10 minutes to help soothe tired and puffy eyes. 

For Hair: Polyphenol, found in green tea is good for the health of hair too. A simple mask for hair can be made by mixing powdered green tea leaves( cut open the green tea bag and pulverize the leaves in a blender), coconut oil and a few drops of lemon juice. Apply it on the roots of hair and massage gently. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and wash it off.

Since green tea is one of the least processed tea, it retains many compounds that are helpful to the body- both internally and externally (for skin). Add this ingredient to your skincare routine to achieve clean and clear skin.
