The Hobby Place: A hub to nurture your inner artist.

Tucked at the far end of a residential street is a homely building which houses Savitha Shenoy’s creative space: The Hobby Place; a space that allows you to create and experience art- any genre, any form, and any number of medium.

The Hobby Place, a concept that began in Mysore, 6 years back, is now ready to offer various hobby classes in Bengaluru. It is essentially a studio, both for children and adults, where you can just walk in anytime during the operational hours, grab a canvas and a brush, and start painting; or if you are in a mood to explore a new art form, like a Handcrafted Mural, just enroll yourself in the classes and start learning from the professional staff, or want to try something therapeutic, then try your hands on the calming pottery wheel.

Started by a former software engineer, Savitha (she has taught graduate and undergraduate classes in Mysore and New York, and is a TEDx speaker too), The Hobby Place is the result of her desire to pursue ethical entrepreneurship. She says that the place is accessible to everyone who want to experience something new, something different rather than spending time in malls and pubs.

Last week I visited the studio along with my daughter upon a friend’s recommendation. It was a pleasure to meet Savitha who ran me through the various classes and sessions the place offers; and I must say the list is quite impressive; from Warli painting and Canvas painting to artsy crafty projects like Tie n Dye and Block Printing, The Hobby Place comprises a wide range of options at affordable prices.

My daughter decided to try her hands at Dot painting. She was given the supplies: a small canvas, paints brushes of varied thickness, and paints. In this form different sized coloured dots are applied to form a pattern. While my daughter was busy in her task, assisted by a trained instructor, I decided to explore the place. The adjoining room was all astir as a workshop on umbrella painting was undergoing. The kids were busy learning to paint an umbrella in colourful pattern using an array of materials.

Here’s the class in progress:

They say the art of pottery is both relaxing and therapeutic and I couldn’t agree more. The clay-soaked hands, the movement of potter’s wheel, shaping and trimming n finally creating a beautiful pot (under the guidance of an expert), are some of the fascinating actions I experienced while making pottery.

The Hobby Place

The Hobby Place which began its operation in Bangalore only a month back is already garnering rave reviews from the community of art enthusiasts. Check their Facebook page  and you know that the place is always buzzing with activity, which you can sign up for in advance. So, you have Acrylic Pour workshop, Resin Geode art, Storytelling session and even Theater workshops, both for adults and kids.

The ground floor has four big rooms dedicated to different activities, a kitchen to organize baking workshops and a small outdoor area done up tastefully which adds to the calm environs of The Hobby Place. The second floor is the space where the theater and storytelling sessions are held.

Also, if you are looking for a space to host birthday party or corporate event you can consider The Hobby Space as venue. They can even fix a customisable, activity-based engagement where the participants take home their handmade creations.

With a belief “there is no mistake in art” so “anybody can do it”, Savitha also maintains that this hub of art is not only about exploring artistic possibilities but is a great place to spend time with friends and family in an intimate atmosphere. Understandably, the creative space is an instant hit with the folk who visit this.

Besides the above-mentioned activities and the art styles, here’s a dekko at the classes hosted at the facility:

Pottery
Drawing and Painting

Terracotta Jewellery making
