Virgin Coconut Oil: The Right Oil to Use in Your Skincare beauty routine.

Sometime back when a friend mentioned that virgin coconut oil works wonder for her skin, I thought to delve deeper into its benefits and usage; because up till then the application of coconut oil was limited to my hair only, and that too the regular refined ones.

Armed with enough information on the usage, I bought myself a bottle of virgin coconut oil and since then have been using it in multiple ways in my skincare regime.

Before I tell you how best you can use virgin coconut oil, I want to tell you why it works.

Virgin coconut oil doesn’t undergo any refining process, unlike the regular ones, hence the oil is not altered in any way. As it is left unrefined, it contains more antioxidants than regular coconut oil. It also has a high amount of Lauric acid, which is effective in killing certain strains of acne-causing bacteria. Besides, it is abundant in Vitamin E, known to promote good skin health.

Precautions while using the oil:

Because of its oily nature, people with oily and sensitive skin should avoid the usage of coconut as it may clog pores on the skin or trigger breakouts.

And it’s better to use cold-pressed virgin coconut oil for your skincare regime as it is nutrient and antioxidant dense. These antioxidants help diminish fines lines and wrinkles.

How to use Virgin Coconut oil in your beauty routine:

As Cleanser: Take little oil in the palms of your hands and rub them together to warm up the oil. Now apply the oil on the face using a circular motion for at least 30 seconds. Now rinse a small towel with very warm water, wring out the excess water and put the towel on your face for a minute. This step will help open your pores and let the skin absorb the goodness of coconut oil. Now gently remove the excess oil with the help of this towel or rinse your face with lukewarm water.

Use a toner after this, I usually spray rose water toner all over the face after cleansing the face with coconut oil. As far as moisturizing goes, chances are you might need one after using this method, but if like me you have dry skin, use a light moisturizer or serum to moisturize your face.

As a Makeup remover:  Dip a cotton ball in coconut oil and gently wipe away the makeup. Use different oil dipped balls to remove different applied products like lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, highlighter etc. once done, use a mild face wash to clean your face thoroughly.

As Body scrubber: Coconut oil can be mixed with brown sugar (it’s soft) to make an excellent scrubber for removing dead skin cells.

As a Face mask: There are different ways I make coconut oil face mask –with honey, aloe Vera and with turmeric. I use a coconut -honey mask especially in winters when my skin gets extra dry. Mix 1tsp each of coconut and honey, make a paste and apply a thin layer on the face. After 10-15 minutes wipe it off first with a warm towel and then wash the face with lukewarm water.  In summers replace honey with aloe Vera gel. Mix equal quantities of both coconut oil and aloe Vera gel and apply on the face. leave for 10-15 minutes and wash with water.

Turmeric gives a natural glow to the skin. Mix a pinch or two of turmeric and 1tbsp of coconut oil and apply it to the face for 15 minutes. Wipe the pack with a warm towel first and then wash the remaining with water.

For Hair: Virgin Coconut oil works wonder for the health of hair. Oiling your hair regularly with this oil helps you avoid frizzy hair and dandruff during monsoons, moisturizes the hair during winters, and nourish them during summers.

Ok, so I wrap up this article here; hope you find the information here useful and don’t forget to share how your skin felt after using coconut oil.
