No Sunlight in the Balcony but love Plants? Try these ones.

With people staying indoors during this pandemic, many have either taken up a new hobby or are brushing up on their long-forgotten ones. For me it’s the former, wherein I took gardening as one of my favourite activity to fill the free time.

I am still in the process of learning finer nuances of the gardening- the type of soil needed, amount of water required or choosing the right plants. Though I also make mistakes along the way, but the sight of flora filled balcony makes the effort worth it at the end of the day.

I have a North-facing balcony which does not get direct sunlight, so to find plants that grow best without bright sunlight is always a struggle.

Here in this blog, from the little gardening experience I have gained so far, I want to share with you all a list of plants that grows well in the balcony which does not get direct sunlight.

  1. Snake plant: Also known as Mother-in-Law’s tongue, snake plant is ideal to try if you have just discovered your green thumb. It is low in maintenance, durable, plus helps clean the air in the home. An attractive plant with stiff green leaves and yellow borders, this one thrives well in sun-deprived balcony as well indoors.2. Palm: One of the most popular Indoor plant, a Palm plant instantly enhances the aesthetics of the place. It doesn’t require much care and easily adapt to low or almost negligible light conditions. For my home balcony and indoors I have planted Areca Palm, whose beautiful fronds gives a lush look to the corner of the house.

              3. Aloe Vera: The plant known for its healing and soothing properties, though grows best                  in south or west facing balcony with bright light, thankfully is thriving well in my other                  balcony which gets indirect sunlight. The succulent, with its fleshy thick leaves and                          jagged edges is low in maintenance, making it an ideal plant for a beginner like me.

             4. Money Plant: Due to the belief that the plant attracts wealth, Money plant is one of the                 most common plant found in homes. The climber is a low maintenance plant and grows                   well in my north facing balcony. In fact, I have kept a few cuttings indoors too in the                       water filled glass bottles and its growing beautifully.

                5. Fern: An evergreen plant is growing quite luxuriantly in a big pot at one corner of my                  balcony. Fern thrives well in indirect sunlight; in fact, its leaves get scorched if placed in                  direct sunlight. One of my favourite plant, this one also makes a perfect backdrop for                      many of my pictures:)

              6. Spider plant: A plant known for its air purifying quality, the foliage of spider plant                         adds to the beauty of indoors and the balcony garden. As direct sunlight is not advised                      for this plant, this one too is thriving well in my living room.
