3 Indian sweets you can make at home in 30 minutes ( or less!!)

Homemade Indian sweets or mithai is a quintessential part of any festive celebration. Sweets, prepared at home and shared with family, friends and neighbours express love, and adds to the whole charm of a festival. With so many festivals ahead of us, many sweets can be prepared quickly and easily by following some simple steps. 

Below are some of the detailed recipes of the Indian sweets that can be made at home in 30 minutes or less:

  1. Ragi ladoo/ Nachni ladoo:

Ragi , a red millet is a very popular and highly nutritious food item. Ladoos, made out of ragi are one of the easiest recipes that can be prepared. Following are the ingredients:

  • Ragi flour
  • Peanuts
  • Jaggery or palm sugar
  • Ghee
  • Almonds/sesame seeds
  • Cardamom
  • Dried coconut(optional)

Preparation:

i) Take one cup of ragi flour and roast it in 2 tablespoons of ghee. Fry till it becomes aromatic. Similarly, you can roast peanuts, almonds, or sesame seeds, dried coconut(optional) separately one after one till they all turn aromatic. 

ii) Allow these roasted ingredients to cool down, after which you can powder them in a mixer.

iii) Now mix ragi flour with the other ingredients and pulse in a grinder. You will see little oil oozing out. Now add Cardamom powder for flavour.

iv) Take small portions of the mix and roll them to perfect ladoos. You can use ghee to ease this process. 

v) store your prepared ladoos in airtight jars.

2. Coconut Burfi:

Coconut Burfi is one of the delicious and flavorful sweets with coconut as the star ingredient. Ingredient list:

  • Coconut 
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Cardamom powder
  • Cashews
  • Ghee

Preparation:

i) In a pan, add ghee and fry the cashew pieces until they become light gold.

ii) Then add the grated coconut and milk to the cashews. Stir it and bring the mixture to a boil. 

iii) cook until the milk evaporates in medium-low heat (12-15 min)

iv) Add sugar to it once the milk has evaporated. The added sugar will further moisten the mixture. Add ghee and continuously stir in low flame until the mixture dries up. 

v) Add cardamom powder for flavour.

vi) The final mixture will appear dense, heavy, dry, sticky and this means that it is in the right consistency to make burfi.

vii) Transfer the mixture to a greased pan, sprinkle cashews on top of it, and then allow them to cool down.

viii) Cut the burfi in a square shape with help of a knife and leave it at room temperature for them completely become firm. 

  1. Javvarisi payasam:

This is one of the traditional and popular dishes of South India. It has many rich ingredients that contribute to its exquisite taste. The ingredients are as follows:

  • Javvarisi/ Sabudana
  • Milk
  • Cashew
  • Sugar
  • Raisins
  • Cardamom powder

Preparation:

i) Heat some ghee and roast some cashews till they become light golden. After some time add raisins. Remove the cashews and raisins after they are cooked properly.

ii) In the same ghee add half a cup of Javvarisi and stir it well. After it starts popping, add 2 cups of water to boil it. Stir it till the Javvarisi is cooked. It will appear to be starchy and transparent. 

iii) Now add 1 cup of milk and cook until it becomes thick. 

iv) After it has become thick, add cardamom powder, sugar and stir it well until the sugar dissolves.

v) Add the fried cashews and raisins to the mixture for the final touch. The Javvarisi payasam is ready to be served.
