10 Clean Hollywood movies with a message for girls.

I am a mother of two girls- a teenager and a pre-teen. I keep teaching them life lessons whenever I have the opportunity, but truth be told, giving them much gyaan becomes repetitive for me, and boring to them. And many at times it also happens that the words fail me. Moments like these call for a dose of a clean Hollywood movie that reinforce the message I try teaching my kids.

So parents, In this article I have put together a list of some lovely movies with strong-willed female characters that can have a positive effect on our daughters thinking. Besides, these movies are also great when our daughters need reassurance that everything will be ok.

These movies give them little perspective about love and life too, which help them examine the choices they make. Above all, by portraying positive gender beyond the stereotypes, these movies make our daughters feel proud to be a woman.

  1. Legally Blonde: This movie breaks all beauty and brains stereotypes. Though The lead character wears pink shimmery outfits with bling accessories – often associated with giggly girls, yet she secures a place in Harvard Law school and eventually earns the respect of her peers and professors as she wins a difficult case. Elle Woods ( the character played by Reese Witherspoon) proves that looking feminine does not define your intelligence.
  2. Hidden Figures: Set in the 1960s of America, when racial discrimination was prevalent, the movie tells the story of three African-American women whose work contributed to the success of a space program. These women fight misogyny, and their strong willpower helps them gain respect in their respective fields.
  3. Bend it like Beckham: The story revolves around a young woman, daughter of Punjabi Sikhs settled in London, who loves to play soccer but has to “bend” certain traditions of her family to fulfil her sports dream. Despite resistance from her family, she joins the local football team and wins the league. Though the movie is 18 years old, but still a relevant watch!!
  4. Mulan, Moana: These two Disney animated movies which showcase strong women in lead manage to create amazing role models for the girls. Both Mulan and Moana are confident and brave young girls who battle against gender stereotypes and sets on a journey to achieve their goals. Brave and Frozen are the other two movies that also shows what women can achieve on their own.
  5. On the Basis of Sex: Inspired by a true story of America’s Supreme Court Justice -Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the movie celebrates the determination, passion and intelligence of the lead character who despite facing gender discrimination, many at times during her student life and later as a lawyer, emerges a formidable force to reckon with. This one should make way into your to-watch list to show your daughters the “girl power.”
  6. Miss Congeniality: Sandra Bullock is amazing in this comedy flick, where she goes undercover to nab a criminal in a beauty pageant. In the process, she has to dump her coarse appearance and turn herself into a beautiful contestant. Watch this movie for pure fun, action, drama and a superb performance by the lead character. This one is though for 13+.
  7. Devil Wears Prada: A good and entertaining fashion-inspired movie, that I am sure you would too enjoy watching with your teenage girl. The movie stars Meryl Streep (as Miranda) and Anne Hathaway (as Andy) in lead roles; the former is the boss and latter her assistant. The movie has a nice message to it- “Be true to yourself”. Andy in the end leaves her job, as she realises it is changing her into something she doesn’t want to be.
  8. Little Women: This coming of age period drama revolves around the story of four sisters who live life on their terms and condition. The movie takes you on a roller coaster ride of varied emotions- happiness, sadness, love, jealousy and kindness. Above all, the movie celebrates sisterhood- their love and care in many forms.
  9.  Shallows: A gripping movie, wherein the central character – Blake lively is stranded on a rock and has to fight off a killer shark to survive. The movie apt for 10+age is about enduring the adversaries of nature to survive, and it is also about the problem-solving skills of the lead character that eventually gets her to safety.
  10. Queen of Katwe: Another movie based on a true story, Queen Of Katwe tells the inspiring story of 10-year-old girl Phiona Mutesi, who lives in slums with her mother and siblings at Katwe, Uganda. She goes on to become an international chess champion after facing many ups and downs on the way. The movie is apt for 10+ age and provides an opportunity to celebrate a girl’s perseverance and achievement.

Next time you want to inspire your daughters to break the glass ceiling, go for these movies.

Watched most of the movies you’ve mentioned and loved watching them during my teenage years. Now with my daughters, I think it’s important to pinpoint with them which are the good and bad things that they can pick-up from the movie as takeaways.
